In Adobe Photoshop, we can create amazing effect with layer mask. What is layer mask? Layer mask is a feature in Photoshop which can help us to erase or hide some part of the image you’ve choose before. To create an effect using layer mask, we can use some steps. Allright here we go, please pay attention for the tutorials.

Create Layer Mask in Photoshop

Using brush tool.

  • First, open your Adobe Photoshop application. We use Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended version, but you can use the later version or earlier version of Adobe Photoshop.
  • Create a new document, click on File > New. If you want to use shortcut, you can press Ctrl + N.
  • There are some options on the new window. Fill the width with 500 pixels and for the height you can fill 350 pixels. I use white background for the canvas. Then click OK to create new document.
  • Now, we will duplicate the background. Right click on background layer and then choose Duplicate Layer. You can use shortcut too with press Ctrl + J.
  • In this step, I will import an image to the layer. You can choose your own image for your document. Allright, let’s begin to import an image into the layer. Click on File > Place. Browse your image and click OK. I used the picture from Madagascar 3.
  • After importing an image, we will rasterize the image. Right click on Madagascar layer and then click Rasterize Layer.
  • Now I will insert the picture of penguins in Madagascar. We can repeat the previous step to import the image and rasterize the layer.
  • Now, we will create a layer mask from Penguins layer. Click on the penguins layer and then click add a layer mask in above.
  • Choose hard brush tool to erase some part of penguin layer. Make sure the color of background is white and foreground is black.
  • Brush some part of penguin layer. If you want to correct your brush, you can exchange the color of background and foreground or just press Ctrl + X.
  • Now, we have been created layer mask effect in Photoshop. For better result, you should learn more time.
